The White Dessert (Sahara el Beyda)

The White Dessert (Sahara el Beyda)

The White Dessert is located approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) north of the town of Farafra. The cream coloured rocks are made from chalk formations, which have been created by sand storms. These spectacularly beautiful chalk formations make a beautiful back drop and the shapes that have been created are numerous and unusual. This truly is a place of beauty and offers many amazing photo opportunities

Take a Bedouin guided tour and spend the night blanketed by thousands of stars amongst the Beduoin tents, after enjoying an evening meal, you can sit back and enjoy the tranquil stillness of the dessert. This is truly a place to enjoy the beauty of the stars and the sun set and sun rise.

The town of Farafra is populated by mainly Bedouins and some parts of the town still retain the traditional architecture.
There are more than 100 wells in this area.

Fararfra is a good starting point to visit some of the best wells the area has to offer.
Wells worth a visit:-
•Bir Sitta hot springs
•El-Mufid lake
•Bira Sab’a
•Bir Ithnian wa ishrin
•The Roman spring of Ain Bishay, which comes forth from the rocks to the north west of the town. This spring has been made into an irrigated grove where citrus, olive, apricot, date palms and carob trees grow. This truly is an oasis in the dessert.
Due to the temperature of the water, which contains a small percentage of sulphur these well springs are perfect for both swimming and relaxation, not to mention the detoxifying effects of the sulphur.
In addition there is the large lake of Abu Nus, which is located approximately 15 kilometres from Farafra, which is also worth a visit if you have time.
